The Wisconsin State AFL-CIO announces endorsements of candidates running for office in Wisconsin in November 2014.
Phil Neuenfeldt President of the Wisconsin State AFL-CIO, said, “Working people in Wisconsin want an economy that works for all of us, not just the wealthy. Wisconsinites want legislators who will prioritize economic opportunity, and a more stable economy with the creation of good, long-term jobs. Union members from throughout the state are ready to work hard and work together to ensure that working family candidates, and in turn an agenda that puts jobs and workers first, are successful on election day.”
As we get closer to the 2014 elections, a lot of things are on our minds. Even though we're working harder and harder every year, our incomes have not kept up with the cost of living. We worry about setting aside enough for a secure retirement, health expenses and our children's educations. We need to elect leaders who care about working people and side with us, not just the wealthy and corporations. What issues will be on your mind as you head to the polls this election season? It's pretty frustrating seeing all the headlines that claim the economy is alive and kicking. Sure, there is economic growth and a steady increase in jobs, but what kind of jobs are we talking about exactly? Well, they aren't the kind of jobs we think of first when it comes to steady, middle-class jobs. No big surprise here, low-wage service sector jobs like those in the fast-food industry are seeing the biggest gains. Bryce Covert at The New Republic has a nice summary of what America's workers are up against when it comes to wages. Read more >>>
When President Barack Obama first announced his candidacy for president, he said: “I am running in this race because of what Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. called ‘the fierce urgency of now.’ Because I believe that there’s such a thing as being too late. And that hour is almost upon us.” Like Dr. King, our president was calling on America to make real the promises of our democracy. That fierce urgency of now is here for thousands of refugee children from Central America. I know many of these kids’ stories because it is my story, too. Read more >>>

(April 2, 2014) – After a collaborative and democratic process involving workers and leaders across the state, the Wisconsin State AFL-CIO has endorsed Democratic gubernatorial candidate Mary Burke for Wisconsin Governor in the 2014 November election.
Gov. Walker has attacked workers’ wages, protections and collective bargaining rights, dismantled voting rights, enacted hyper-partisan redistricting lines, and failed to create good jobs for hard-working Wisconsinites. Wisconsin ranks an unacceptable 35th in the nation in private sector job creation. In March, Wisconsin ranked #2 in the nation in job losses. It is blatantly clear that Wisconsin needs new leadership to get our economy back on track and put Wisconsinites back to work. Read more...
The AFL-CIO today issued a report, NAFTA at 20, which summarizes the unfortunate experiences of workers in Mexico, Canada and the United States in the twenty years following passage of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). With the NAFTA model proving to be the template for additional trade deals in the past two decades and the Obama administration negotiating two massive trade deals, this report is particularly timely.
This report demonstrates that the high hopes of NAFTA proponents have not been realized. Instead, Read more...
