Attacks on safe voting during coronavirus

On June 29, 2020, an appeals court upheld Republican-authored attacks on voting rights in Wisconsin. During the COVID-19 pandemic having access to safe voting is a fundamental underpinning of our democracy. After forcing in-person voting in April during the COVID-19 health pandemic, Republicans have now limited options for safe, early in-person voting. Once again, Senator Scott Fitzgerald, Representative Robin Vos, and legislative Republicans have demonstrated they are willing to undermine our ability and right to vote in order to secure their own partisan advantage. Republicans actions show that are willing to rig our democracy if it means winning. What a shame. It’s telling Republicans have recognized the only way they can keep running their agenda and maintain power is to attempt to keep working people from casting a ballot. That’s just wrong. And we won’t let it stop us. We won’t let the voter suppression schemes of Robin Vos and Scott Fitzgerald stop us. Make a plan now to vote safely during COVID-19. There’s no need to wait, request your absentee ballot today at: myvote.wi.gov today. The 7th Circuit Appeals Court panel of 3 Republican-appointed judges upheld GOP restrictions on in-person early voting, including:
  • Limiting in-person early voting to 14 days before an election.
  • Banning most voters from having an absentee ballot emailed or faxed.
  • Voters must live in district for 28 days, not 10, before they can vote in that district.
The ruling does allow for:
  • College students to use expired student IDs at the polls.

At the Wisconsin AFL-CIO, we believe our democracy works best the more people participate in it. We won’t let this GOP-led attack on voting rights stop us from voting and making our voices heard this November.

Request your absentee ballot today to safely and securely vote by mail. Remind friends, family, and co-workers to request their own ballots in the wake of this ruling.
